The Blue Flag program is a voluntary certification procedure for beaches and marinas managed by the international Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) - a non-governmental organization with national organizations from over 70 countries around the world as members. Its representative for Bulgaria is the Bulgarian "Blue Flag" movement. Launched as a European initiative in only ten countries in 1987 in partnership between the Foundation for Environmental Education and the European Commission, the Blue Flag campaign now covers around 50 countries in Europe, North and South America, Asia, Africa and Oceania, promoting clean and safe beaches and marinas and educates the whole community to protect the coastal environment by contributing, both through their voluntary participation in environmental initiatives and their daily behaviour. The Blue Flag program brings together the tourism and environmental sectors at the local and national level. Bulgaria has been a member of the European family for only a few years, but the "Blue Flag for Beaches and Marinas" Program has over 18 years of history in Bulgaria. This European initiative received worldwide support, and today it is spreading to all continents.
The main idea of the Program is related to the environmental education of current and future generations. The "Blue Flag" award is a testimony not only to a clean natural environment in the area of the beaches, but also to their excellent management, consistent with its preservation and development.
How can a beach get a blue flag?
To earn a Blue Flag, beach and marina managers and the people who visit them must meet a number of criteria related to seawater quality, environmental information and environmental education, safety, services and amenities. Certification under the "Blue Flag" Program is a chance for beaches and marinas to compare their management policy with world standards, to compare themselves with similar resorts, to prove to everyone that they meet the high requirements of the "Blue Flag" global eco label. Participation in the "Blue Flag" is voluntary and depends mainly on the initiative and ambition of the concessionaires.
